TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian seminary scholar described the holy month of Ramadan as a good opportunity for Muslims to strive for spiritual improvement and Tahzib Nafs (purifying and training the self).

Ayatollah Ali Akbar Rashad

Ayatollah Ali Akbar Rashad, director of Tehran’s Seminary Schools, said seminarians, in particular, should use the opportunity for spiritual studies and reading the Holy Quran.

He noted that the blessed month of Ramadan is concurrent with the Nowruz holidays in Iran, which mark the Persian New Year.

These holidays give seminary students a chance to focus on studying a special subject such as an interpretation of the Holy Quran, the scholar added.

He said one can, for example, read a Juz of the Holy Quran every day in addition to the interpretation of the verses and contemplation of their meanings and concepts.

This will have great spiritual effect and help one improve in religious and spiritual fields, Ayatollah Rashad stated.

He went on to say that Ramadan is a month in which one can gather enough spiritual provision for an entire year if he or she uses the blessings and opportunities available in this month.

Ramadan (which is likely to start on Thursday) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity giving and self–accountability for Muslims around the world.

The Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) heart in this month.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast (abstain from foods and drinks) from sunrise to sunset.

They also devote a considerable amount of time during this month to reading and contemplating the Quran.
